The Hawk is a British single-engined, advanced trainer aircraft. It first entered service in 1976 as the Hawker Siddeley Hawk, and subsequently as the BAE Hawk. Several variants have been produced, including two-seat trainers, a naval fighter-bomber, and a number of single-seat ground-attack variants.
The Hawk is used by a number of air arms around the world, including the Royal Air Force. The RAF Red Arrows are display pilots for the Hawk and operate it in dual seat trainer variants.
The Red Arrows aerial display team, or ‘The Reds’, is the aerobatic display team of the Royal Air Force based at RAF Waddington, previously based at RAF Scampton. The team was formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands.
The RAF Hawk first flew in 1974 and entered RAF Service in 1976. The Red Arrows first started using the Hawk for displays in 1980 while they were still based at RAF Kemble.
In 1983 they moved to RAF Scampton, and are currently continuing to fly the Hawk T.1 to this day at their current home, RAF Waddington.
